Real Salt Women hosted the Texas Spurs Friday night at Ute Field and won 11-0. This game was a perfect opportunity for everyone to get involved and to get on the score sheet. Collette Smith started the onslaught of goals in the 1st minute by taking the ball off the kickoff and dribbling going right to goal. She beat 3-4 players on the dribble, while eventually slotting the ball to the far post side netting. That was a sign of things yet to come for the remainder of the game. Collette finished with 3 goals and 3 assists. Jeni Viernes had a goal and 3 assists. The Texas Spurs had their best chance of the match in the 7th minute when they played a long ball over the top of the RSL backline forcing Becca Ritchie to come off of her line. Ritchie misjudged the hop and the ball landed over the top of her but Alyssa Lowry was there to clean up the mess and prevent any chances.
The Spurs had just came off of an impressive 4-1 victory over the Houston Titans, who RSL lost to back on May 29th. You could tell early on that they were struggling with fatigue probably from the travel and elevation. They had moments of great individual skill but they only had 2 subs on the bench.
The first half ended with RSL Women up 3-0. Collette Smith creating all 3 chances, scoring 2 and assisting to Jeni Viernes on the other. Smith was a handful for the Spurs defense beating players in all out speed and in one versus one duels. At one point Smith did a scissor feint and snaked the ball outside to inside to fly by the defender. It was fun to watch.
RSL Women started the second half just like they did the first by winning the ball off of the kickoff and going right at the Texas Spurs. Jeni Viernes won the ball and slipped Brittany Crump in to beat the goalkeeper in an easy finish. Four minutes later Collette Smith had another chance to go one on one with Bedoy the Spurs goalkeeper, and Bedoy brought Collette down in the box. Bedoy won a red card for her efforts for being the last defender and denying a clear goal scoring opportunity with a foul.
Rebecca Ritchie, RSL Women’s goalkeeper stepped up and made no mistake about it, putting RSL up 5-0. This is where the floodgates really opened up and chances were coming like sweets at Christmas time.

Coach Jeff Ginn has really been translating what he sees from the Real Monarchs side to this RSL Women’s club. The style of possession and team shape and philosophy is modeled after the Claret and Cobalt team that we have grown to love. Don’t miss the next home match.
